TREATMENT

At the Oxford Centre for Eating Disorders, we offer the leading evidence-based treatment, which is called Cognitive Behaviour Therapy-Enhanced (CBT-E). CBT-E has been shown to be an effective treatment for people who are suffering from symptoms of an eating disorder. This treatment was developed here in Oxford and is used in centres around the world. During CBT-E, you and your therapist will firstly meet for an assessment appointment, which usually lasts for up to 90 minutes. During this meeting, you will gain a good understanding of your eating problem. You and your therapist can then decide together, as to whether CBT-E is the best treatment to help you, or whether there are other treatments that are better suited to you at this time.

If you and your therapist decide that CBT-E is the right treatment for you, then you will agree how many sessions you may need to resolve your eating problem. The duration of CBT-E is usually up to 20 therapy sessions for people who are normal weight or overweight, and up to 40 therapy sessions for people who are underweight. Each therapy session lasts for 50 minutes.

CBT-E is a collaborative treatment, which means that you and your therapist work together as a team, in order to help you to resolve your eating problem. This will involve making some changes to your eating, at a manageable pace. You will also address some of the factors that are maintaining your eating problem. This may include, helping you to resolve concerns about your weight and shape, helping you to develop new strategies to manage challenging emotions, or working on issues such as low self-esteem, perfectionism, or problems within your personal relationships.

At all times during treatment, we ask you to maintain regular contact with your GP, in order to monitor your physical health.

CBT-E is an empowering treatment, where you will always have choice about the changes that you decide to make. You will be welcomed at all times, to speak openly with your therapist about your treatment, so that we ensure that you get the most out of your therapy.

CANCELLATION POLICY

CBT-E therapy is most effective when you are able to build a positive momentum during your sessions. We therefore ask you to ensure that you're able to attend regular appointments, particularly during the first six weeks of treatment. We appreciate that this can sometimes be difficult due to University term-time commitments, and we are therefore able to offer Zoom sessions.

If you do need to cancel an appointment, we kindly ask that you let us know as soon as possible. Appointments that are cancelled within 24 hours prior to the appointment time will be charged at the full session price.
